Super Mario Bros: The Movie is an upcoming CGI animated action comedy adventure film created, developed and distributed by Universal Pictures and Illumination. It is also Nintendo's third Mario movie. It will be released in 2022.

Story

Somewhere in the Mushroom Kingdom, a young princess named Peach is conversing with her father, King Toadstool, about what the Koopas are. He explains that Koopas are the bad guys who hold evil intentions but assures Peach that he will protect her from them.

Many years later, a two-man plumbing crew, in the form of brothers Mario and Luigi, arrive at the Mushroom Castle for their next plumbing job, where Peach's birthday party is scheduled for the following week. They are guided by the Princess's majordomo, Toadsworth, to the basement where all the pipes are mixed up and disconnected. Although Luigi doubts if they can fix it, Mario immediately focuses and gets on the job. Soon, the Mario Bros. quickly get to work and eventually clean up the plumbing. Once the moment of truth arrives when they turn on the system, it suddenly reveals many various monsters flooding the basement like a tsunami in the process (including Fighter Flies, Sidesteppers, Spinies, Buzzy Beetles and even some Koopa Troopas). Mario pulls out his plunger (to which the monsters laugh at) and tries to fight them off for all he's worth while Luigi gets cornered by some of them. Fortunately, Mario kicks a Koopa shell at him which Luigi kicks to the enemies and knocks them all out. They soon question what these monsters were doing here, but think they might have sought shelter in the pipes. When Mario goes on to ask which of the monsters didn't belong there, Luigi answers with the Koopa Troopa. Meanwhile, a Fighter Fly was observing them and flies away after the conversation. Mario went after it to get some more info. However, once he got a hold of its feet, it flies out of the basement and into Toad Town to cause mayhem in its wake.

Meanwhile, Princess Peach is playing a video game in the castle, accompanied by her attendants, Toadbert and Toadiko. Suddenly, the Fighter Fly bursts into the Princess's chamber with Mario in tow. While flying through the chamber, the Fighter Fly gives Mario a kick which drops him onto the ground. The Fighter Fly immediately rushes towards Peach, who ends up knocking it out with a frying pan, gaining Mario's love with that action. Peach asks if Mario was alright, but Sheriff Bookum, who was suspicious of Mario, manages to catch up and prepares to arrest him of all the trouble he caused in Toad Town. However, Toadsworth explains that Mario probably has a good explanation for what happened. Mario soon explains his progress to the Princess and was reminded of the Koopas before revealing they encountered them in the pipes. Peach and Toadsworth draws the conclusion that Bowser was going to attack the kingdom. Right at that moment, there was an earth shock, and they all headed outside to discover a massive Koopa invasion descending upon the civilians, rounding them up in front of the Mushroom Castle. After the Koopas box everyone near the Mushroom Castle and hold them hostage, Bowser makes his grand entrance on his airship.

In his rap introduction, Bowser explains to Peach that he has come to take over the Mushroom Kingdom, and that the only way they will live peacefully is by accepting his hand in marriage. However, the outraged princess refuses, so Bowser turns all her people to stone as an example to his power. Eventually, Toadsworth reminds Princes Peach that they have Mario and Luigi on their side, as they never faced Bowser before, but discover that Mario has also been turned to stone. This enrages Princess Peach, who demands for Bowser to reverse his spell. However, Bowser refuses, and gives her time to think about it instead hence only then will the spell be broken if Peach accepts his proposal. After Bowser and his army leave on his airship, the princess leaps out the window, intending to chase after him. Calling her military squadron (including her Pink Yoshi) to her side and donning herself in her knightly armor (armed with a sword and shield), Peach announces that she will try and negotiate with Bowser, although Toadbert and Toadiko immediately disagree with her decision. Peach says she has to do so to protect the kingdom, making Toadsworth bless her on her journey. Toadiko deems Peach brave to which Toadsworth agrees. Toadbert, however, gets angry at Toadsworth for not stopping her, although Toadsworth replies she would've gone either way as it is the best for the kingdom.

Meanwhile, Luigi is trying to get Mario to return to normal. Toadsworth, Toadiko, and Toadbert, however, have the idea to call the Minister of Massage, who massages the stoned civilians and Mario. One week later, Mario and the civilians are back to normal. After learning from the Toadsworth, Toadbert, and Toadiko about Peach's pursuit, Mario decides to go and check on her to ensure her safety, followed by Luigi.

Using the Star Path, Mario and Luigi warp to Fossil Falls, where they ride a raft through the rapids, and then over a huge waterfall. After landing onto a small portion of land with several "?" Blocks on it, they start hitting the Blocks, hoping one contains a vine that would eventually get them on dry land. However, a white egg with green polka dots comes out one of the Blocks instead. Finding themselves hungry, the brothers try to cook the egg, but it suddenly hatches into a baby Yoshi, much to their surprise.

Elsewhere, in Dry Dry Desert, Princess Peach's troops complain about their low water supply, much to her annoyance and nonbelief. One of the troops tries to tell Peach that the search is ridiculous. Just as he points out that there are no clouds in the sky, clouds suddenly start appearing. Peach's company attempt a rain dance, but Peach reveals the clouds to be Lakitus, who capture them all with nets attached by Spinies.

Back in Fossil Falls, while Mario and Luigi begin wandering over the rapids, Yoshi starts crying. Luigi asks Yoshi if he is hungry. The trio is then approached by two tyrannosauruses, which surprises them. Luigi hands Yoshi over to the t-rexes, thinking it's their baby, but the t-rexes gloat about their find and decide to eat Yoshi, but quickly pulls him away. The Tyrannosauruses then attempt to eat Mario and Luigi as well, but, after a long chase, the trio dives into the river to escape their doom. Once underwater, the trio are then attacked by a Rip Van Fish and a Maw Ray, but both fish are eaten by a Boss Bass. Once on a beach, Mario and Luigi wring the water from their hat; as they are doing this, though, Yoshi waddles away. Noticing Yoshi has wandered away, the brothers begin to search for him.

As Yoshi is admiring some flowers, a Wiggler walks towards him. The brother jump on the Wiggler and catch up with Yoshi. The Wiggler suddenly explodes in anger and advances towards them, and followed by multiple others, forcing the brothers to cry for help. Suddenly, Yoshi begins to eat all the Wigglers, defeating them, and eventually growing into a full grown Yoshi immediately after. The brothers are then greeted by the Great Yoshi Chief, the leader of all Yoshis who reveals himself as the writer of the book, and explains that Bowser's Koopa Tribe has been at war with the Mushroom Kingdom in an event which he called "The Great Mushroom-Koopa War". Princess Peach believed in the prophecy of faraway, mustachioed, temperamental twins in attractive, colorful, rich overalls coming to her rescue, but when she sought Mario, she was kidnapped by Bowser, who plans on marrying her on Friday the 13th. Mario is furious (even putting on a "Yosemite Sam" outfit to show off his rage) and vows to defeat Bowser and rescue Peach. The Yoshi Chief tells Mario he will require the assistance of mystical items (such as the mushroom, flower and star), which were scattered throughout the world by Bowser's minions. Mario goes on ahead, with Luigi inquiring about a reward and being told that he may collect any of the many gold coins and treasures he will come across. Yoshi also accompanies the brothers, encouraged by the Yoshi Chief to keep a watchful eye on their progress, who then mysteriously vanishes as he wishes them good luck.

At the Koopalings' tower, Ludwig and the others are playing a video game when the screen cuts to a video feed of Bowser, who explains to them that he has proposed to Princess Peach. At that moment, his chef shows him the model for his wedding cake, stating that the actual cake will be twice as big, though Bowser wants it even bigger. He then reminds his children to make sure the princess does not escape, but they have already switched back to playing the game, prompting Bowser to yell at them (destroying the screen in the process). Lemmy points out that the princess is still safely in her cell, but they suddenly see that she is gone and quickly open the cell to check. Peach, however, has actually perched herself on the ceiling and drops down on them, knocking them out with her black belt karate maneuvers and escaping. However, after getting back her sword and shield the Koopalings confescated, she is confronted by Wendy and several guards, who attempt to recapture her, but she battles her way upstairs.

Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi have arrived outside the castle, with Yoshi saying that Bowser's forces must have took her inside. Mario tries to swim across the moat, but is attacked by Urchins, Fish Bones, and Porcupuffers (which the moat is filled with).

Back in the tower, Princess Peach reaches Wendy's room and barricades the door, but ends up once again fighting with the male Koopalings, who had their sister bail them out as she makes her way upstairs. She climbs onto the windowsill to escape, looking and seeing how high up the window is, and the Koopalings charge at her. However, the Princess acquires a Super Acorn from her "!" bag to become "Flying Squirrel Peach" and make her escape, allowing her to fly away to safety.

Meanwhile, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi walk around the Koopalings' Tower looking for a way inside, but are taunted and pelted with hammers by Hammer Bros. After the trio escape the bombardment, Luigi decides to give up, not realizing he is sitting on a Bill Blaster. Mario knocks him off, and is caught as it fires a Bullet Bill, sending him flying toward the tower and directly past Peach, causing her to lose her Super Acorn power. Mario then crashes into Wendy's room (the Koopalings surprised to find him) while the princess lands in the woods, with Luigi and Yoshi finding her unconscious.

Bowser is infuriated that Peach has escaped. He scolds his kids, and as they make excuses, his anger causes him to smash the room he is in. Wendy, however, reassures him by telling him they have captured Mario, whom they can use as leverage to bring the Princess back.

While Luigi performs CPR on Princess Peach, Yoshi manages to revive her with a 1-Up Mushroom. However, she panics when she sees only Yoshi, only to run into Luigi, whom she criticized for following her. Suddenly, the Princess is met by two Mechakoopas from an incoming boat, who announce that Mario is being held prisoner, and that they want Princess to come back with them in exchange, demonstrating what will happen to Mario by burning a doll if they do not. This gives Peach an idea of disguising Luigi as her to infiltrate the Koopalings' Tower and save Mario.

Inside the tower, Bowser congratulates his children on bringing back his bride (who is wearing a surgical mask). Ludwig tells him that she will not accept his proposal, but the princess tells Bowser that she loves him and will marry him. Bowser is happy, but points out that her voice sounds weird, though she says that she has a cold. She then asks to be untied, to which Bowser agrees, and he cheers after turning off communications.

Meanwhile, Mario is sitting in his cell when Luigi appears, revealing to him that he has disguised himself as Peach (though Mario laughs at him) as part of a mission conducted by the actual Princess to rescue him. When Wendy appears, Luigi asks what they are going to do with Mario, and she tells him that they plan to feed him to the piranhas. After an initial shock, Luigi changes the subject and offers to order pizza as a toast to the bride's return, which the Koopalings agree to. He calls Yoshi, disguised as pizza delivery man, who heads to the tower with his "delivery". As he arrives in the tower, however, the box opens, revealing the actual Princess Peach with a Bob-omb in her hand, prompting mass panic amongst the Koopalings' staff.

Peach threatens to blow up the tower if the Koopalings do not free Mario. The Koopalings, however, are confused that there are two Princess Peaches until Luigi reveals himself. As they try to charge, Peach reaches for the key on the Bob-omb's back threateningly, though Wendy calls her a bluff. While the Koopalings are distracted, however, Luigi sneaks over Roy and steals the keys to Mario's cell from him. He leaps over Roy when he dives for him, but he ends up jumping into the ceiling and drops the keys, which Yoshi catches, and as he runs away, he stealthily passes the keys back to Luigi, who gets to work on freeing Mario, though he cannot find the right key.

The Koopalings continue to chase Yoshi, but they cannot catch him. Wendy finally trips Yoshi, which sends him crashing into Peach, and she drops a Thwomp onto them. Meanwhile, Luigi finally unlocks Mario's cell, but must now find the right key to release the ball and chain on his leg. Wendy sends a horde of Chargin' Chucks after the group, but Peach once again threatens to use the Bob-omb. Wendy insists that she is bluffing, but the princess states that she is more than willing to sacrifice herself to stop them (Wendy calling her crazy for it). However, Mario has finally been freed and takes out the Chucks, though the Koopalings criticize the brothers into the fact that only a knight can rescue a princess, not a plumber. As the four heroes lament, the Koopalings send them down into a dungeon below.

As the quartet battles Petey Piranha in the dungeon, the hesitant Peach winds the Bob-omb's key and places it onto the ground, where it begins walking towards the beastly plant. Eventually, the Bob-omb detonates, destroying the Tower completely and sending the heroic quartet flying on Dry Bones Shells into Cool, Cool Mountain, where they sled their way down back to the Mushroom Kingdom just in time to celebrate Princess Peach's birthday.

During the Princess's birthday party, Peach is presented with a Fire Flower for good luck by Mario and Luigi, making Peach realize these are her favorite flowers her father used to plant for her family's garden. She then goes on to explain to the Mario Bros. about how her father was killed during the trial of Bowser (who was sentenced to permanent exile to Dark Land where his tribe now resides). In tears, Peach concludes this as the real reason the Mario Bros. have to protect the Mushroom Kingdom on her father's behalf, in which Mario and Luigi agree to help defend it from the hands of Bowser.

Suddenly, the Mushroom Castle was lifted by an airship fleet and was carried over to Dark Land where it is placed on top of Castle Koopa, the main headquarters of the Koopa tribe. The rest of the kingdom evacuated, but the Princess is left trapped inside the castle at the hands of Bowser. As the Toads lament later on, Mario inspires all of Toad Town to accept who they are: soldiers who struggled to survive during the Great Mushroom-Koopa War; under Mario's leadership, they reorganize their army back in full force to follow Bowser and his minions to Dark Land.

During the Mushroom Army's pursuit, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi take a shortcut through a gloomy-looking house, unaware that they are being watched by Bowser and the Koopalings with a camera mounted to the house. The bros. see that nobody is inside, so Luigi tries to go in, believing that this is someone's vacation retreat. Mario, however, grabs him by the overalls, insisting that he has a weird feeling about the house. The Koopalings gasp, believing that the trap was not going to work. Bowser then explains that they are too tired and hungry to not go inside, and Mario simultaneously states that he believes it is a trap. Panicking, Bowser presses a button to activate his "trump card". As Mario is leaving, Luigi insisting that he is paranoid, they start to smell provolone, which draws Luigi inside. Mario and Yoshi chase after him, shouting at Luigi to stop, but Yoshi gets caught in the door and Mario is knocked off into the house as a metal door slams down from above, shutting Yoshi out and trapping the brothers inside. Bowser, pleased that his plan worked out, skips off to continue planning his "perfect wedding".

As Mario wanders the halls, calling for Luigi, a Boo appears behind him. Mario notices quickly, and turns around. However, the Boo stops and hides its face. As Mario inspects it, asking if it was following him, a second Boo floats towards Mario and bites him in the bottom, angering Mario. As he faces the second Boo, the first one quickly bites him. Mario races away with the Boos giggling behind him.

Meanwhile, Luigi has followed the scent to a room with a huge piece of provolone cheese being aired by a huge fan. Luigi is suspicious for a moment about the fan, then exclaims that it is too good to pass up. As he eats the cheese, a large horde of Boos start to slowly gather behind him. At the last second, Mario appears and warns him of the Boos inches behind him. When Luigi turns around, he panics and runs away with Mario. The Boos corner the bros. against a wall, so the Mario brothers slide along the wall, keeping their eyes on the Boos. Eventually, they slide until they reach a hallway, unaware that a massive Boo is behind them.

As Mario and Luigi back down the hallway, Luigi trips, noticing the giant Boo behind them. Luigi freaks out, causing Mario to turn around in confusion. When Mario turns around, he becomes very surprised by this Giga-Ghost. Upon the brothers both turning away from them, the horde of smaller Boos advance, chomping on Luigi. The brothers stand back-to-back, Mario keeping an eye on the Big Boo, and Luigi looking at the smaller Boos, keeping them both away.

Meanwhile, at Bowser's castle, Bowser and his Magikoopa attendant, Kamek, watch a massive group of Yoshis pulling the cart with the giant wedding cake on it; Kamek explains that they hired a Magikoopa hypnotist to entrance them. Regardless, Bowser warns him to keep an eye on the Yoshis, as they are still enemies. Then, Bowser asks of Peach, and he is informed that her dress is being fitted. Unable to hold back his anxiousness, Bowser rushes to her room to take a peek before the wedding, Kamek trying in vain to warn him that it is bad luck.

Back in the haunted house, hours later, Mario and Luigi are getting tired from staring down the Boos. However, their apparent shyness gives Mario an idea, and he pulls Luigi under the big Boo, and towards a nearby room. They close the door, and Luigi questions why they wanted to go here. Mario quickly starts to rearrange some items, and when the Boos finally get inside they find Mario dressed as a doctor, with Luigi as his nurse. They direct the Big Boo to lie on the couch, and Mario diagnoses him with anthrophobia (a fear of humans), asking to be told about his childhood. Later, the big Boo and the smaller Boos are all crying as the Boo has explained its troubled past (even Luigi starts crying because he had similar experiences, though Mario will not counsel him). Finally, Mario comforts the Big Boo, telling him not to let his bullies control his life. He also tells the Boo how big of a universe there is, and those bullies did not matter compared to the vast universe. They head outside to get some air, and as thanks for helping them Mario asks how to get to Bowser's castle. Once the Boos are out of sight, the brothers remove their disguises and regroups with the Mushroom Army soon after.

At Bowser's Castle, a large crowd has gathered for the wedding between Bowser and Princess Peach. Meanwhile, the hypnotist halts the hypnotized Yoshis pulling the cake, and he orders them to march down a conveyor belt and into a machine, where they are sealed in eggs. Up above, Mario is watching with Yoshi and notes that the security is tight. Luigi then finds a pipe that he believes will bring them inside. While traveling through the pipe, Luigi complains about the heat and, after scrambling to the end of the tunnel, the group finds that it leads into a lava-filled cavern. Mario sees a small rock island in the lava, but when they jump on it, a Thwomp starts to fall. They jump away before it can land on them. Luigi and Yoshi land on another rock island, but Mario finds himself jumping across a group of Blarggs before leaping through another pipe on the other end.

Meanwhile, Bowser is preparing for the wedding when he is informed that not only is the bride's chamber is on fire, the Princess has gone mental. At Bowser's signal, the Koopa Fire Department (consisting of a squad of Goombas led by Mouser) is summoned to extinguish the flames consuming the bride's chamber. Just then, Peach is revealed from the smoke wearing a white dress with red panniers, collar, and dress hem. After the Princess revealed that she acquired the Fire Flower to become Fire Peach, she then explains how her father died because of Bowser and now she plans to avenge him rather than accept the Koopa King's hand in marriage. To end this conversation, Fire Peach burns Bowser by shooting fire at him, causing him to bounce and run around the bride's chamber on fire, before plunging into a barrel filled with water. Upon realizing the severity of the situation, Bowser has the hypnotist brainwash her into loving him, and he is so thrilled with the results that he orders a Troopa to bring him a video camera to record it.

The wedding begins. While Bowser is bringing the Princess down the aisle, Mario has found his way through the pipe he went through, which happens to come out of Bowser's wedding cake. Seeing the ceremony, Mario jumps down to object to this marriage after the Princess says her "I do". Despite Mario's attempt to help Peach escape, he is shocked to hear the Princess calling Bowser "darling". He is then ridiculed by Bowser, who compares him as garbage for failing to defend the Mushroom Kingdom, even the rest of the Koopa tribe joins in the jeering.

Elsewhere, Luigi and Yoshi have gotten lost in the basement looking for Mario. They find a room full of eggs, and Yoshi suddenly becomes ecstatic, pointing them out to Luigi. Luigi recalls that he and Mario hatched Yoshi out of a similar egg, and realizes that the other Yoshis have been trapped in these eggs. The two then set to work freeing them all.

Back at Castle Koopa, a triumphant Bowser prepares to "sacrifice" Mario to a Piranha Plant when he is informed by a Paratroopa that an army of Toads on Yoshis, led by Luigi, Yoshi, and Toadsworth, is outside the castle. The Mushroom Army soon decsends down upon the Koopa Army, and a big battle between two armies ensues. The Magikoopa hypnotist tries to stop them, but is trampled, which breaks the spell on the Princess, who promptly pulls out a Super Star from her bouquet and throws it to Mario to make him become Invincible Mario, who soon frees himself from his bonds and joins into the fight, cheered on by Peach. Bowser and Kamek attempts to escape in their Clown Car, but Invincible Mario grabs it by its propeller and throws it into the cake. Bowser hides inside the cake as the Yoshis start eating it, and as soon as he emerges, he finds Mario standing over him. Bowser tries to charge at him, but misses and falls into the cake again. The cake then starts to fall apart, and Mario jumps off before it collapses on top of Bowser.

Although cursing Mario doesn't work, Bowser is finally grabbed by the tail and thrown him into the horizon by Mario. The rest of the Koopa Army (including Kamek and the Koopalings) were so scared of Mario, that they all run off to recover Bowser while being chased away by the Mushroom Army. With the war won, Peach is returned to the Mushroom Kingdom, where the Mario Bros. and Yoshi are presented with medallions for their acts of heroism.

In the post-credits scene, a defeated Bowser is seen waving a white flag while being hauled away by a pair of Lakitu medics.
